Royal Canin Mother & Babycat Canned Kitten Food Review

Royal Canin’s formulas are among the best in the world. Backed by industry-leading research, their top cat foods are renowned for catering to specific nutritional needs. With this Mother and Babycat canned kitten food formula, they’ve created a food that caters specifically to kittens that are transitioning from milk to solid foods. It’s also suitable for feeding to the mother cat, though portions must be adjusted.

As always, the formula is exceptionally well balanced and brings nutrition to very young kittens in a palatable texture. A soft mousse bridges the gap between milk and solid foods, meaning there’s no risk of the kitten struggling to get to grips with hard kibble.

For kittens up to 4 months, this really is the perfect formula. Royal Canin has done it again, producing a premium kitten food that excels in providing the nutrients crucial for development.

Nutritional Information

With a crude protein content of 9.0% to an 81.0% moisture content, this kitten formula has a 47.4% dry-matter protein content which is excellent. The same is true for the 4.0% fiber content, which equates to a 21.0% dry-matter value.

As well as having a fantastic macronutrient profile, the formula is packed with DHA for healthy brain and eye development. You’ll also find taurine along with plenty of essential fatty acids to aid in a healthy growth stage.

Caloric Density and Feeding Guidelines

919 kcal/kg | 78 kcal/3oz can

At 78kcal/3oz can, this formula is hardly the most calorie-dense kitten food available. It’s best described as “middle of the road” in terms of calories, and this is partially down to the formula being suitable for both mother and kitten. Because of this, you must stick rather closely to the recommended feeding portions to ensure your kitten is getting enough calories each day.

Royal Canin recommends the following portion sizes for kittens fed on 3oz cans:

Age of Kitten6.6-lb Adult Weight11-lb Adult Weight
1 Month1 1/2 – 1 3/4 cans daily2 – 2 1/4 cans daily
2 Months2 cans daily2 1/2 cans daily
3 Months2 1/2 cans daily3 1/4 cans daily

Our Verdict

This is another excellent formula from Royal Canin that excels not only as kitten food but also as food for the mother cat. Dealing with Royal Canin’s premium price tag can be an issue for some, though at the very least, we’d recommend trying this food alongside a dry kitten food to achieve some better economy. If you’re able to bite the bullet and serve this excellent formula to your kitten for their first four months, you’ll be in safe hands. Highly recommended formula if you can fit it to your budget.
